On Saturday May 20, 2023, Sudan’s warring factions reached an agreement on a seven-day ceasefire, as announced by United States and Saudi mediators, Deutsche Welle reports. During a meeting held in Jeddah, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces officially agreed on a ceasefire scheduled to commence on Monday May 22 at 9.45pm local time in Sudan, according to a joint statement issued by the United States and Saudi Arabia. The possibility of extending the ceasefire will be considered if both parties mutually agree.

Radio Dabanga reports that the President of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), and commander-in-chief of the Sudan Armed Forces, Lieutentant-General Abdelfattah El Burhan, has issued a constitutional decree officially dismissing Lieutenant-General Mohamed ‘Hemedti’ Dagalo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), from his position as deputy president of the TSC with immediate effect. El Burhan has appointed Malik Agar, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement North faction, as the new deputy president.

Nearly 850,000 people have been displaced internally and 250,000 have fled across Sudan’s borders since fighting broke out between Sudan’s military and the RSF.
